Tinubu urges youth to harness digital media for unity, innovation, growth

By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to use digital media as a tool for unity, innovation, and national development, rather than a platform for division and misinformation.
Speaking at the opening of the Progressives Digital Summit on Friday at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu said digital platforms have the potential to drive economic growth, empower young people, and shape the nation’s future.
The two-day summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” gathered government officials, tech experts, youth leaders, and civil society groups to explore how digital tools can be leveraged for national progress.

“I challenge you to use your platforms not only for self-expression, anger, or retaliation, but for solving problems and mentoring others,” the President said. “Let the digital space reflect values that bind us—honesty, compassion, discipline, and patriotism.”
He highlighted the Federal Government’s investments in expanding digital infrastructure to improve internet access and noted that online safety is as vital as physical security. Cybersecurity, he said, must be a shared national priority.

“As our digital ecosystem grows, so must our collective responsibility to ensure safety, trust, and accountability,” he added.
Tinubu commended Nigerian youths for building communities, creating solutions, and amplifying their voices through digital media. However, he urged them to verify information before sharing it, warning that misinformation is a threat to national unity.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also cautioned against disinformation, especially as the 2027 general elections approach, emphasizing the need for truth and responsibility online.
