Tottenham beat Man Utd to win Europa League trophy

Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night defeated fellow English side Manchester United 1–0 to lift the UEFA Europa League trophy.

Brennan Johnson’s goal, three minutes before the end of the first half, was all that separated the two sides in the final played at the San Mamés Barria in Bilbao, Spain.

It was a special night for Spurs, who ended their 17-year wait for a trophy and also secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, despite being in 17th place on the Premier League table heading into the final round of matches.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was delighted to claim silverware in just his second season at the club, delivering Tottenham’s first European title in 40 years and their first trophy in 17 years and 84 days.

The defeat capped a dismal season for Manchester United, who entered Wednesday’s final just one place above Tottenham in the Premier League and were hoping to salvage the campaign with a Europa League triumph and secure a spot in European competition.

With no trophies and no European football next season, it has been a season to forget for United manager Rúben Amorim, his players, and their supporters.
