Traditional hierarchy debate reignites as Alaafin, Olubadan exchange cold gestures

A brief but tense moment involving two prominent traditional rulers in Oyo State occurred on Monday during an inter-faith programme organised by the state government, drawing widespread public attention and debate.
The incident took place at the Secretariat Grand Space, behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, where the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, were present at the event.
According to eyewitnesses, the atmosphere momentarily shifted when the Alaafin, while seated, extended his hand in what appeared to be a courteous greeting to the Olubadan. The gesture was not acknowledged, as the Olubadan proceeded to exchange pleasantries with Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, and other dignitaries before settling into his seat.
The incident reportedly sparked murmurs among attendees and has since attracted strong reactions across the state, particularly among cultural observers and traditional institution stakeholders.
The development has reignited conversations on traditional hierarchy, protocol, and long-established customs among Yoruba monarchs. While some commentators questioned the appropriateness of the Alaafin’s gesture, others criticised the public nature of the perceived snub, warning that such incidents could undermine the dignity of traditional institutions.
As of the time of filing this report, the Olubadan has not issued any statement on the situation , while the Alaafin’s palace is yet to comment.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to pour in on social media, with historians, culture enthusiasts, and residents expressing differing opinions.
Amid the growing controversy, calls have intensified for calm, dialogue, and reconciliation between the two monarchs to protect the integrity and harmony of Yoruba traditional governance.
