Traditional institutions must remain apolitical – Balogun of Ibadanland

By Adejayan Gbenga

The Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Abimbola Ajibola, has cautioned against the politicisation of Ibadan’s traditional institution, urging that the Olubadan stool be protected from partisan influence.

He made the call during a press briefing held at his residence in Ibadan, where he addressed recent tensions within the traditional system.

According to him, the Olubadan of Ibadanland throne remains a symbol of unity, heritage, and stability, and must not be dragged into political disputes.

He stressed that while he holds the Olubadan in high regard, there is a need to ensure that nothing brings the institution into disrepute.

Furthermore, he urged the monarch to remain neutral and avoid actions that could be interpreted as political, in order to preserve the dignity of the stool.

The traditional ruler also commented on the controversy surrounding Sharafadeen Alli, particularly issues linked to his reported refusal to accept a traditional title while remaining active in politics.

He noted that the situation highlights the challenges of combining traditional responsibilities with political ambitions, stressing that both roles demand distinct commitments.

Oba Ajibola, however, called for caution and further engagement among stakeholders, noting that the matter is yet to be formally deliberated by the Olubadan-in-Council.
