Troops defeat terrorists in Borno, foil ambush in Cross River — DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said Nigerian troops operating in the North-East have maintained control of their bases after successfully repelling a fresh terrorist attack in Borno State.

Military authorities disclosed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai foiled an attempted infiltration by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters at Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area.

The military said the attack was part of recent efforts by the terrorists to stage a comeback after suffering a series of operational losses, but noted that the troops were well prepared for the assault.

In a statement on Saturday, by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said the troops had prior intelligence about the planned attack and put in place strategies to counter it.

According to him, the troops launched coordinated counter-offensives as the terrorists advanced, disrupting their formation and blocking possible escape routes.

The terrorists were eventually forced to retreat after encountering what the military described as superior firepower, while also suffering significant casualties.

The DHQ said the failed infiltration represents the third unsuccessful attack by terrorists within 24 hours, following earlier failed attempts on Banki and Azir Bridge.

Military authorities said the development reflects the sustained pressure being mounted on terrorist groups, limiting their operational capabilities in the region.
