Troops foil Boko Haram attacks in Borno, neutralise terrorists

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have foiled coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Buratai, Biu Local Government Area, and Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, killing scores of insurgents and recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations at the Headquarters Theatre Command, the attempted attack in Buratai occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 5, 2025, when terrorists tried to infiltrate a military base from multiple directions.

However, troops on the ground swiftly responded with heavy gunfire, supported by the Air Component of OPHK, which provided close air support to repel the attackers. Several insurgents were neutralised in the encounter, and troops recovered assorted weapons and ammunition. The military is currently carrying out further clearance operations in the area.

In a similar development, troops stationed at Mallam Fatori also repelled an attack by terrorists who launched an assault from different fronts. The soldiers engaged the insurgents with superior firepower, forcing them to flee in disarray. Air support from the Air Component Command (ACC) was instrumental in the counteroffensive.

“The resilient troops pursued the retreating terrorists after hours of a gun duel, neutralising scores of the insurgents, while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the statement read.

Preliminary findings indicate that several terrorists were killed and a significant quantity of arms was recovered, including AK-47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), and other equipment.

The ongoing exploitation of the general area is being supported by the Air Component and the Nigerian Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command.

The army described the successful operations as further proof of the determination of OPHK to deny terrorists freedom of action in the region.
