Troost-Ekong urges Nigerians to rally behind Super Eagles
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has called on Nigerians to rally behind the national team as they prepare for a crucial World Cup qualifying encounter.
Set to earn his 83rd cap for Nigeria, Troost-Ekong delivered a message of belief and composure ahead of what could be his final World Cup qualifying campaign.
“This is a massive opportunity,” he said. “It’s not a moment to look back — we have to focus on what lies ahead on Tuesday. We have a special generation here who want to make a name for themselves and go down in history.”
The 30-year-old defender, who captained Nigeria to World Cup qualification on the same Uyo turf in 2017, recalled the emotions of that moment and expressed his desire to recreate it.
“I remember when we qualified here for the 2018 World Cup,” he said. “I hope tomorrow we can make the same kind of memories.”
Troost-Ekong also addressed the growing pressure surrounding the team, urging fans to turn their tension into positive energy and show full support for the players.
“It’s a very difficult job, understanding the emotion and intensity of this game,” he said. “We need shared responsibility — everyone has to step up.”
“Playing here, I’d love to see the stadium full. We’ve believed when others didn’t, and we’ll continue to do so.
“We can’t control other results. What we can control is our performance. We’ll give our best version tomorrow — and hopefully that’s enough.”
