A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Oluwatosin Abidakun, has been crushed to death by an articulated truck in Ibadan, Oyo State, while another corps member sustained injuries in the crash.
The incident occurred on Monday around Agodi Gardens in Ibadan North Local Government Area when the truck reportedly rammed into a motorcycle conveying the two corps members.
Abidakun, who had recently resumed her primary assignment at the Oyo State House of Assembly, was reportedly returning home with her fellow corps member after the day’s work when the crash occurred.
The surviving corps member sustained injuries, including a reported broken leg, and was taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, for treatment. Meanwhile, Abidakun’s body was deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the truck had collided with several vehicles around the Sango area before proceeding towards Agodi Gardens, where it struck the motorcycle carrying the corps members. One of the witnesses said the earlier collisions had occurred before the truck reached the scene of the fatal crash.
Another eyewitness claimed that the driver was attempting to flee after the earlier collisions, adding that some of the affected motorists were pursuing the truck when it hit the motorcycle. However, the circumstances surrounding the earlier collisions and the driver’s actions were not independently established in the account.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident. The state sector commandant, Kehinde Dahunsi, said personnel of the corps evacuated the victims and arranged for the injured corps member to receive medical attention.
The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, expressed sorrow over Abidakun’s death, describing it as a devastating loss, particularly because she had only recently begun her national service. He extended his condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and fellow corps members and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured survivor.
