Trump’s remarks on Remi Tinubu worth celebrating — Oshiomhole

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has described comments credited to United States President Donald Trump about Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as a source of national pride and worthy of celebration.
Oshiomhole, who spoke on Friday after a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, explained that he came to exchange New Year greetings and to congratulate the President on the international recognition accorded to his wife.
According to Oshiomhole, Trump acknowledged Nigeria’s First Lady as a respected and responsible woman, as well as a Christian pastor, during a public event — a gesture he said reflected positively on Nigeria.
“As a Nigerian, I feel proud. When the world’s most powerful man uses such words to describe our First Lady, it is important that we celebrate it,” Oshiomhole said.
He noted that Trump, known for his blunt style, publicly recognised Senator Tinubu and invited applause for her, adding that such recognition would have attracted intense political commentary if it had occurred under different circumstances.
Oshiomhole said the remarks also carried a deeper message of unity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.
He pointed out that while President Tinubu is a Muslim, his wife is a Christian and a pastor, describing this as a powerful symbol of peaceful coexistence between faiths.
“For me, this shows there should be no tension between the Bible and the Koran. It is a message to Nigerians that we must walk together as one people for the common good,” he said.
