Tshisekedi, Kagame to attend Tanzania summit for ceasefire in DRC

Tina Salama, the spokesperson for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi reiterated that the Central African leader will participate in a joint summit of Eastern and Southern African leaders on February 7-8 in Tanzania.
The summit is focused on discussing the conflict in DRC’s eastern region where M23 rebels continue to gain territory and have seized control of Goma, a key trading city which is also the capital of North Kivu Province.
It will be held soon after M23 announced a ceasefire in Goma, and seized control of Nyabibwe, a mining town in DRC.
Tshisekedi is scheduled to participate in the summit alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame, despite souring relations between the two leaders over allegations by Kinshasa and other international bodies, of Kigali backing M23’s aggression in DRC. However, the East African nation denies supporting the rebels.
It remains unclear whether Tshisekedi’s participation at the summit will be in person or virtual.
