Two arrested over murder, arson of young woman in Mile 12 — Lagos Police
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two principal suspects in connection with the brutal murder and burning of a young woman on May 24, 2025, in the Gangare slum area near the canal behind Mile 12 Market, Lagos.
According to a press statement signed on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the victim, originally from Nasarawa State, was allegedly attacked and set ablaze in a premeditated act orchestrated by her estranged boyfriend and accomplices.
The police clarified that contrary to widespread misinformation, there was no blasphemy involved in the incident. The statement noted that the deceased had been living in the area with relatives from the northern part of the country, and her exact occupation remains unknown.
“Facts from preliminary investigations clearly revealed that she is from Nasarawa State and not a Yoruba woman. The protracted problem between her and her boyfriend, now at large, who tried to forcefully rekindle their relationship, led to the conspiracy,” Hundeyin stated. “The boyfriend, along with other suspects, two of whom are now in custody, planned and executed the attack.”
The police described the killing as a “cold-blooded and premeditated crime of conspiracy and murder” and urged the public to condemn such heinous acts.
The two suspects are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are assisting detectives in efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects, including the victim’s boyfriend.
Assuring residents of their safety, the Command noted that normalcy has been fully restored in the affected area, and there has been no threat of ethnic tension or reprisal attacks in the Ketu-Mile 12 axis or other parts of the state.
“Lagosians are encouraged not to panic and to go about their lawful activities peacefully. While awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation, members of the public are urged to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing fear or unrest,” the statement read.
