Two persons were confirmed dead and 15 others injured in a lone accident involving a commercial truck at the Iwo Road junction in Gbongan, Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State.
The incident, which occurred at about 8:26 a.m. on Wednesday, involved a blue DAF E2000 truck reportedly transporting both livestock and human passengers from Kebbi State to Ikire, Osun State.
The Osun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Leye Adegboyega, in a statement by the Sector Public Education Officer, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the truck was loaded with approximately 70 animals—including cows, goats, and sheep—with human passengers seated on top of the livestock.
The crash was attributed to alleged driver fatigue, as the driver reportedly dozed off multiple times during the journey.
According to statements from some of the passengers, the driver had fallen asleep at least twice after the truck passed Osogbo. Upon reaching the Surprise Hotel area in Gbongan, he allegedly fell asleep again. As a result, the truck veered off the road, plunged into a roadside ditch, overturned, and violently ejected both animals and passengers.
The FRSC boss revealed that two male adults died on the spot, while 15 others—including 13 men and two women—sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He added that two injured victims and one dead body were taken to Adeoye Medical Centre, Gbongan, while 13 injured victims and another deceased person were taken to Ariremako Medical Centre, Gbongan. The crashed vehicle was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Gbongan Division.
Adegboyega cautioned motorists against using unroadworthy vehicles and advised all drivers to remain vigilant and drive responsibly.
