Ahead of Monday’s quarter-final duel against defending champions Senegal in the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, head coach of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, Aliyu Zubairu, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to secure victory and qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Sunday, Zubairu emphasized that the team is fully aware of the importance of the game and is determined not to miss the opportunity of earning a World Cup ticket.

“We have really prepared for the match. Considering how far we’ve come, we know this is a make-or-break moment for us,” he said. “The boys understand what is at stake, and I believe we will scale through to the semi-finals.”

Acknowledging the strength of the opposition, Zubairu noted that Senegal, as defending champions and long-time rivals, will present a formidable challenge. However, he believes Nigeria’s past records and current form can tilt the game in their favour.

“Tomorrow won’t be an exception. All those historical factors will influence the game, but I am optimistic we will win,” he added.

The coach stressed that his players are not under undue pressure but are instead motivated by the magnitude of the opportunity ahead.

“Any competitive match comes with pressure, but it’s the kind that motivates rather than hinders,” Zubairu explained. “We’ve been building up to this since WAFU-B, and the goal has always been the World Cup.”

He concluded by affirming the team’s mental readiness and unity of purpose, assuring fans that the Flying Eagles are prepared to give their best.
