UN pledges support to NDLEA in combating drug abuse

In a significant development aimed at bolstering efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria, the United Nations has pledged its support to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, Mrs. Mohammed reiterated the UN’s commitment to enhancing the impact of NDLEA’s efforts in tackling the complex challenges of substance abuse and drug trafficking.
She emphasized the importance of collaboration across various sectors to address the root causes of drug abuse, stating that the partnership between Nigeria and the UN would ensure that all people have a right to their dignity.
Commending the exemplary leadership of Brig Gen Marwa, Mrs. Mohammed highlighted the vital role NDLEA plays in safeguarding public health and national security. She underscored the UN’s readiness to support NDLEA’s endeavors, emphasizing the importance of a collective effort to achieve a better Nigeria and contribute positively to the global community.
In response, Brig Gen Marwa expressed gratitude for the UN’s visit, noting its historic significance as the first visit by the highest echelon of the United Nations to NDLEA.
He also commended Mrs. Mohammed for her distinguished service, both domestically and globally, and expressed appreciation for her role as a beacon of light for Nigeria and the African continent.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts of NDLEA in combating drug abuse and trafficking, Brig Gen Marwa outlined key achievements, including significant arrests, prosecutions, and seizures of illicit drugs.
He also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness and providing treatment and counseling to drug users as part of NDLEA’s comprehensive approach.
During the visit, discussions were held on ways to further enhance NDLEA’s capabilities, including conducting a new drug use survey, procuring modern equipment for drug destruction and forensic analysis, and supporting alternative development programs.
The visit by the United Nations delegation signifies a renewed commitment to collaboration in addressing the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in tackling this global challenge.
