The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), has reaffirmed the institution’s stance against cultism, stating that it has been eradicated from the university for over two decades. He emphasized that Unilorin maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such social vices.

Speaking at the annual Iftar and media interactive session held at the VC’s lodge on Monday in Ilorin, Egbewole commended the university’s security architecture, student body, and other key units for their role in maintaining peace and discipline on campus.

“As a university, we ensure that security is well managed. Our strategy remains dynamic. You will agree with me that we have exterminated cultism from our university for more than two decades. We have an effective security system in place, a responsible and responsive student body, and an efficient students’ affairs unit. Above all, we uphold zero tolerance for cultism,” he said.

On the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the institution, Egbewole highlighted the series of events planned for the celebration. “Earlier this year, in January, we unveiled the 50th-anniversary logo. Later in April, we will hold an international conference as part of the celebrations. In July 2025, we will unveil university ambassadors and confer awards of excellence, with the grand anniversary celebration taking place in November,” he explained.

The VC also underscored the university’s commitment to religious harmony, stating that Unilorin provides a welcoming environment for all faiths. “We accommodate all religions within our community. Our uniqueness lies in the fact that we celebrate with our Christian brothers and sisters at Christmas and also felicitate with the Muslim ummah during Eid-Kabir,” he added.

Reflecting on the significance of Ramadan, he stressed that it is a period for strengthening faith in Allah and reinforcing concern for one’s neighbors, friends, and community.

Addressing the recent state of emergency declaration in Rivers State, Egbewole shared insights from a recent legal discussion at the Faculty of Law. “A few days ago, during a cluster discussion, we analyzed the situation in Rivers State. Our academic position is clear, devoid of sentiment or political bias. We believe there is a need for constitutional amendments to prevent similar crises in the future,” he stated.

Speaking on the institution’s internationalization efforts, the VC noted that Unilorin remains committed to expanding global partnerships. He emphasized the need for more Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen various centers within the university. The event also featured a short sermon by a representative of the university’s Chief Imam.
