The Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Alumni Association has urged the Osun State Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of five students on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

In a statement, the association’s president, Comrade Abdulbasit Abubakar, expressed deep shock and sadness over the incident, attributing the accident to reckless driving.

“Our on-the-spot assessment of the accident scene shows that reckless driving led to the senseless loss of lives. It is imperative that the driver who drove against traffic and caused the deaths of a member and prospective members of our community be held accountable,” Abubakar said.

He emphasized that poor road conditions should not be an excuse for reckless driving, adding that the Ife-Ibadan Expressway is a dual carriageway where a head-on collision could have been avoided if all road users, particularly truck and bus drivers, adhered to traffic rules.

The alumni association called on the Osun State Government to press murder charges against the driver responsible for the crash.

“In line with its mandate to protect lives and property, we respectfully call on the Osun State Government to press murder charges against the reckless bus driver, ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families,” the statement read.

The association also urged both the state and federal governments to take concrete steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future. They emphasized the need for stricter road safety measures, improved road infrastructure, and well-equipped medical centers for emergency response along the expressway and other roads near the university’s six campuses.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the university management, families, and loved ones of the deceased: Suleiman Farouq Adedayo, Olagbemide Dotun, Ogundare Pelumi, Ogundare Elijah, and Olawuyi Mary,” the statement concluded.
