The Vice Chancellor, Osun State University, Prof. Odunayo Adebooye has announced that the university has made it mandatory for all new students to apply for and access the Federal Government’s student loan provided through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Speaking at the 18th matriculation ceremony of the 11,000 students admitted into the institution, Adebooye said the decision was made by the university’s management to alleviate the effects of economic hardship on students as well as make student life easy for them.

The VC also said that the University, recognizing diverse backgrounds the students came from, operate a student work-study scheme, where indigent students are employed in specific University’s areas of operations while supporting such students with stipends for their upkeep.

He further said that the university offers a range of scholarships for both excellent and indigent students.

Adebooye however, warned against social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and truancy.

According to him, “You all have to note for your all-time guidance that it is not everyone that starts any race that usually completes the race. The race in this context is competence building and knowledge acquisition, which come with regular lectures, assignments, tests, examinations and character moulding all through your residency here.

“Achieving these tasks will demand grit, effort, dedication, and consistency on your part. You must submit to academic schedules as they relate to your programmes. You must meet the prescribed requirements for graduation, and your conduct and relationships with others must be guided by the University rules and regulations.

“The matriculation oath you have sworn to here today is binding on all of you, and it subjects you to all the authorities and regulations of Osun State University. Accountability and responsibility await you should you elect to willfully break or circumvent these provisions.”
