US tightens visa rules on Nigerians

The United States Government has introduced stricter visa rules for Nigerians and nationals of several other countries.

The new measures now limits most non-immigrant visas (like tourist or business) to single-entry with 3 months validity.

A statement posted on the website of the United States Mission in Nigeria on Tuesday, said, “Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.”

Announcing the updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, the United States Department of State clarified, “U.S. non-immigrant visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will retain their status and validity.”

The statement noted that the new rules reflect visa policy reciprocity between countries, adding that “visa reciprocity is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time.”

This new visa rule implies more frequent applications have to be made by intending Nigerian travellers, making trips to the US harder.
