VIDEO: Bukky Wright says many Nigerian men can’t handle self-made women

Popular Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has stated that many Nigerian men are not ready to handle self-made women.
The movie star expressed this opinion on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
She said, “To be sincere, you picture the right man coming to you, and most times, it’s a no because, a lot of the time, the men who believe they are right for you don’t approach you. I’ve heard it many times where someone says, ‘Where do I start from?’ and I’m like, seriously? Start from wherever—start from the beginning. You are a man, I am a woman, you know what I mean.
“But unfortunately, you find that the men who have the courage to approach you as an actress are often those chasing clout or men with questionable intentions. You can’t blame the women in the industry because these are the men that approach them.”
Continuing, she said, “And when someone with such intentions gets married, what do you expect from that marriage? At the same time, even when the right men come along, a lot of them don’t have what it takes to be with a self-made woman or a popular actress. Sometimes, these men get jealous over things they shouldn’t be jealous of, forgetting that they met this woman in her career—whether on screen as an actress or as a self-made woman—before they approached her.
“So, what exactly are they jealous about? Is it the fame or what? Because I see this happen a lot, and it has happened to me. I will say it again: Nigerian men are not ready for a self-made woman. I’m sorry if it comes across as an insult, but are you truly ready for an independent woman? If you want an independent or strong woman, trust me, there are certain things you have to accept.
“But if you want a woman who will completely submit to you, then maybe you should go to your village and marry someone without aspirations. Because if a woman has ambitions and you try to hold her back, she will rebel.”
The Omotara Johnson star also revealed that motherhood and parenting responsibilities kept her off the screen for some time.
