VIDEO: Flood displaces residents, disrupts movement in parts of Osogbo

Several residents of parts of Osogbo, Osun State, have fled their homes and sought shelter with friends as rising floodwaters inundated parts of the city following persistent rainfall.

The affected areas include Ijetu, Oke-Ayepe, Aregbe/Abija, Baruwa, Omigade in Ogo-Oluwa and Koledowo along the Ilesa Garage axis, where residents have been confronted with rising floodwaters and difficult movement.

In Ijetu, floodwaters reportedly entered several homes, destroying household belongings and displacing families, while some businesses also suffered damage to goods and other properties.

The flooding has also affected the access road beside FirstBank in the Aregbe/Abija area, where floodwater has taken over the road, leaving residents and other road users stranded.

Residents called for urgent intervention by the Osun State Government, Osogbo Local Government, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant authorities to investigate the causes of the flooding and improve drainage and other flood-control measures.

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has commiserated with residents and families affected by the recent flooding in parts of the state, urging residents to stop building and dumping refuse on waterways.

The governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on homes, businesses and livelihoods, noting that Osun had experienced excessive rainfall in recent weeks.

Adeleke directed the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, led by Elder Ayanleye Aina, to visit affected areas and assess environmental conditions contributing to the flooding.
