“Nigeria and China have enjoyed warm bilateral relations for 53 years, dating back to 1971. This enduring friendship is evident in numerous high-level exchanges, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024. These engagements have deepened cooperation and solidified our ties,” he said.

The Vice President expressed admiration for China’s culture and global achievements while calling for greater collaboration between the two nations.

“This is a crucial time for enhanced South-South cooperation. We must deepen engagements between Nigeria and China. Strengthening our ties is imperative for mutual growth and development,” he added.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the One China policy and expressed optimism about overcoming security challenges with China’s support.

“You have mentioned security; peace is essential for development, and development is impossible without peace. We are committed to repositioning Nigeria’s security architecture through technology and innovation. Your support, cooperation, and partnership in this regard are invaluable,” Shettima stated.

Earlier, Zhang Qingwei, leader of the Chinese delegation, lauded the strategic partnership between Nigeria and China, describing it as a new chapter in their relations.

“In September this year, President Tinubu attended the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and undertook a State visit. During this time, President Tinubu and President Xi Jinping announced the elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership,” Zhang noted.

He assured that China is committed to implementing agreements from the summit and advancing Nigeria-China relations to greater heights.

Zhang also emphasized the need for political support between the two nations, noting that President Tinubu’s economic diversification agenda aligns with China’s willingness to support Nigeria’s developmental goals.

The delegation included the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, and senior officials from China’s National People’s Congress: Hon. Chio Bing, Vice Chairman of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee; Hon. Wang Li-Sha, member of the Committee of Institutions; and Hon. Sung Si Dung, member of the Constitution and Law Committee and the China-Nigeria group.
