VON, Chinese embassy launch Mandarin and cultural exchange programme in Abuja

The Voice of Nigeria and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria have launched a Chinese Language and Cultural Teaching Programme aimed at strengthening cultural ties, media collaboration, and mutual understanding between Nigeria, Africa, and China.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja, is designed to encourage Mandarin learning among Nigerians, particularly media practitioners and young people seeking educational and business opportunities in China.

Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Jibrin Baba Ndace, described the programme as a major step toward deepening the long-standing friendship between Nigeria and China.

According to him, the initiative would further promote cooperation, mutual respect, and shared development between both countries through language learning and cultural exchange.

Ndace commended the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre for supporting educational and cultural cooperation, noting that the programme aligns with the station’s vision anchored on “People, Platform and Partnership.”

He stressed that language remains a vital tool in international relations and effective storytelling, adding that greater cultural understanding would help both countries share more balanced and positive narratives.

The VON Director-General also explained that the programme complements the organisation’s recent expansion into Mandarin broadcasting, as well as broader China-Africa media cooperation efforts.

According to him, the initiative would help project positive stories about China to African audiences while equally showcasing Nigeria and Africa positively to the Chinese public.

In his remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the programme as timely amid growing cooperation between China and African countries.
