Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Friday, April 11, attended the turbaning ceremony of renowned legal scholar Prof. Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN), who was conferred with the traditional title of Kuliya Ngeri of the Ilorin Emirate.

The ceremony, held at the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, HRH Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, attracted a distinguished audience, including top government officials, traditional rulers, and members of Nigeria’s legal community.

Prof. Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 1997, was honoured for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering advocacy for justice and integrity.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, while speaking at the event, described the honour as a reflection of the profound respect Prof. Ali commands within and beyond legal circles.

“Today’s event is an indication that the people of Ilorin, especially the Emirate, have confidence in what he is doing, and I believe he will justify the confidence reposed in him,” Governor Zulum said, urging the honouree to remain committed to his principles and continue serving society through his legal work.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), also commended Prof. Ali’s enduring impact on the Nigerian legal system, stating that the title Kuliya Ngeri—which means “one who stands for justice”—aptly reflects his legacy.

“To me, it is a recognition well deserved. I urge him to take it up as a challenge so that he will continue to mentor people coming behind,” Fagbemi said.

Prof. Yusuf Ali, Principal Partner at Ghalib Chambers, is widely respected for his integrity and expertise. He is also a Life Bencher and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
