…commissions mosque in Ogbomoso, warns against selfishness

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to embrace community service and legacy-building as essential aspects of true leadership, rather than prioritizing personal gain.
At the inauguration of the Ibapon Central Mosque in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Friday, Shettima emphasized the importance of spiritual obligations and community commitment amid a growing trend of individualism. He expressed concern over shifting societal values, noting that many now view acts of service and religious dedication as burdens rather than priorities.
“Today, the world is unfortunately marked by a mindset that values self-interest over selflessness, and many see giving back or even engaging in spiritual obligations as burdens or distractions,” Shettima stated.
The newly inaugurated mosque, a multi-million naira project funded by Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari of Oyo North Senatorial District, symbolizes a commitment to enduring legacy. According to Shettima, the mosque serves as a “gift for generations” that contrasts with contemporary materialistic values.
“Every second of our lives is a reminder of our impermanence, and the brevity of life underscores the urgency of filling our days with deeds that matter in the hereafter,” the Vice President added, highlighting the mosque as an example of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity).
Shettima called on political leaders and affluent Nigerians to reflect on the impact of material pursuits, stating, “We must ask ourselves—what remains when this race ends? In the end, all that endures are the records of our selfless deeds, our adherence to our faith, and our acts of charity.”
The Ibapon Central Mosque is expected to serve as a major spiritual hub for Muslims in Ogbomoso and neighboring areas, with Shettima expressing hope that it will provide “a source of spiritual strength and inspiration for this community and beyond.”
Also speaking at the event, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, praised Senator Buhari, describing the mosque as a service not only to the Muslim Ummah but to humanity. “My prayer is that God reward you with Al-Jannatul Firdaus. You are an epitome of good character and someone who is always at the forefront of service to this country and humanity,” he stated.
Oyo State Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, commended Senator Buhari’s commitment, saying, “The immediate family of Senator Buhari would be proud to have someone who makes them very proud all the time.”
Representing the Governor of Oyo State, he added that the mosque represents more than a physical structure, describing it as a spiritual endeavor that fosters unity and calls for peace across Nigeria.
Senator Buhari expressed gratitude for the support he received, calling the project a “dream come true.” He extended thanks to the Vice President, the governors of Oyo and Kwara States, members of the National Assembly, and community members who contributed to the project’s success.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; the Soun of Ogbomoso Land, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye; state government officials; and traditional rulers.
The event included a welcome address by the Aare Musulumi of Ogbomosoland and the formal turbaning of two Imams for the new mosque.
