VP Shettima commiserates with victims of military airstrike in Sokoto

Pays Condolence Visit to Gov Namadi in Jigawa Over Demise of Mother, Son

Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State following the tragic loss of lives during a military operation targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area.

Approximately 10 villagers were reportedly killed on December 25, 2024, when the military struck a logistics base of the insurgents, with several others injured.

In a statement on Saturday, Vice President Shettima extended heartfelt sympathy to the families of those inadvertently affected by the operation. He described the incident as a rare but deeply unfortunate outcome of efforts to eliminate terrorism from the country.

Speaking on the tragedy, he said: “I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives during the coordinated joint operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma against the Lakurawa terrorist groups at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area.

“We are profoundly sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the immense pain this has caused during such difficult times. I call for understanding, especially as our gallant Armed Forces are fighting and sacrificing their lives to protect the very people caught in the crossfire.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the relatives of those who perished in this tragic event. May Almighty God ease your pain and grant you the courage to bear the loss.”

The Vice President, on behalf of the military, expressed regret over the incident and appealed for continued public support for the troops. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and actionable intelligence to improve the precision of operations and prevent harm to civilians.

He also reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue assisting our brave troops in their operations to ensure a safer Nigeria for all. The courage and dedication of our military, coupled with the resilience of the Nigerian people, will prevail against the monstrous evil of terrorism.

“Security is a collective responsibility. Together, we can make a difference. I assure you that President Tinubu’s administration is resolutely committed to eradicating terror and ensuring a peaceful Nigeria where citizens can live and work without fear of attacks.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Shettima on Saturday led a delegation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a condolence visit to the government and people of Jigawa State over the loss of Governor Umar Namadi’s mother and son.

Hajiya Mariam Namadi, the Governor’s mother, passed away on December 25, and within 24 hours, his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, also died, compounding the family’s grief.

Accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, members of the National Assembly, and other dignitaries, Shettima visited Hadejia, Jigawa State, to offer condolences.

During the visit, the Vice President reflected on the inevitability of death and offered prayers for the deceased.

“Death is an inevitable destiny for us all. We are all from Allah, awaiting our time to return to Him with our deeds as our baggage.

“He added: “We are here on a very sad note to condole with you over the loss of the matriarch of your family, a pillar of support, followed by the passing of your beloved son. May Allah grant their souls eternal rest and Aljannah Firdaus.

“May Allah also grant the family the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses.”
