Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampedes that recently claimed multiple lives across the country, describing the incidents as a profound national tragedy.
In Okija, Anambra State, a Christmas palliative distribution turned deadly on Saturday when a stampede claimed the lives of 22 people and left several others injured. The chaos erupted during an early morning rush for relief items.
The same day, in Abuja, another tragedy unfolded during an annual Christmas food-sharing event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, where ten people lost their lives.
These incidents came on the heels of a stampede at the Islamic High School, Basorun, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday. The mishap occurred during a holiday funfair, resulting in the loss of several children’s lives, with many others rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) for medical attention.
In a condolence message released on Sunday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), VP Shettima offered prayers for the victims and extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
“I am extremely saddened by these tragic incidents that have claimed innocent lives. My prayers and thoughts are with the grieving families of all victims, including those who sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.
“I am particularly distraught by the fact that so many lives of Nigerians, particularly children, have been lost in stampedes that ought to have been avoided through proper planning and organization.
“This is not just a loss for individual states; it is a loss for the entire nation. May the Almighty God grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed,” he said.
The Vice President also assured the affected families of the federal government’s support during this difficult period.
“We stand ready to support the bereaved families through this challenging time, and no effort will be spared in providing the necessary assistance they need.
“We have directed relevant agencies to provide immediate support to affected families. To those currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, their recovery is our priority, and we will stand with them through this difficult time,” he stated.
The Vice President emphasized the need for better planning and organization to prevent such tragedies in the future, reiterating the federal government’s commitment to supporting all those affected.
