WAFCON exploits earn Oshoala CAF special recognition

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has honoured Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala for her outstanding contributions to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

As the countdown to the 2024 edition of the championship in Morocco continues, CAF has been spotlighting record-breaking achievements by countries and individuals across the tournament’s history.

Oshoala, who is set for her fifth WAFCON appearance, made her debut in 2014, helping Nigeria clinch the title in Namibia and announcing herself as a rising star.

“While Nigeria’s name was already synonymous with success at WAFCON, 2014 marked the arrival of a new star — a 20-year-old forward who left an unforgettable imprint on the competition hosted in Namibia,” CAF stated in its build-up to Morocco 2024.

That tournament proved to be Oshoala’s breakthrough moment. She led the Super Falcons’ attack, scoring four goals and providing key assists on Nigeria’s path to victory.

The Super Falcons defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the final to secure their seventh WAFCON title, with Oshoala named Player of the Tournament for her stellar performances.

Now 30, Oshoala has become the face of African women’s football, holding a record six CAF Women’s Player of the Year awards (2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023)—the most by any African player.

Currently playing for Bay FC in the United States, Oshoala has scored 37 goals in 61 international appearances and boasts three WAFCON titles, further cementing her legacy as one of Africa’s greatest football icons.
