WAFCON: Super Falcons target winning start against Tunisia

By Olaolu Joseph –
Nine-time champions Nigeria will kick off their quest for a tenth title in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as the 13th edition of the championship begins in Morocco this weekend.
The Super Falcons will hope to start their campaign on a winning note when they face Tunisia this evening.
The Group B encounter will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time.
Nigeria aims to maintain its dominance in WAFCON, having won the tournament nine times and reached the semi-finals in all 12 of their previous appearances.
The Falcons boast an impressive record against North African opposition, with four wins and two draws—a statistic that will serve as motivation ahead of their clash with Tunisia.
Tunisia, on the other hand, will be aiming to progress further in the tournament, having previously made two appearances at WAFCON. They reached the quarter-finals in 2022, and their 4-1 win over Togo remains their only victory in the tournament so far.
The only previous WAFCON meeting between Nigeria and Tunisia was in 2008, when the Tunisians surprisingly held the Falcons to a goalless draw.
Nigeria’s coach, Justine Madugu, will rely on her star-studded squad—including captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Francisca Ordega, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Halimatu Ayinde, and others—to get the job done against the Tunisians.
