WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup: Olowookere invites 25 players to camp

By Olaolu Joseph

Head Coach Bankole Olowookere has invited 25 players to the camp of Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, ahead of the WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup competition scheduled to take place in Ghana from 12th to 26th December 2024.

Olowookere has drawn primarily from the squad that not only reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic recently but also won the FIFA Fair Play Trophy at the tournament. The Flamingos were eliminated after a 2–0 loss to eventual bronze medalists, the USA, in the quarter-finals.

Among the notable call-ups is midfielder Shakirat Moshood, who scored four goals during the World Cup. Also included are first-choice goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, defenders Taiwo Adegoke, Jumai Adebayo, and Prisca Nwachukwu, midfielder Farida Abdulwahab, and forwards Harmony Chidi, Peace Effiong, and Janet Akekoromowei.

The Flamingos have been drawn in Group B of the two-week, six-team tournament alongside Cote d’Ivoire and Niger Republic. Hosts Ghana are in Group A with Burkina Faso and Benin Republic.

All invited players are expected to report to the Remo Stars Sports Institute, Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, on Tuesday, 3rd December 2024.
