WCQ: South Africa risks sanctions for violating FIFA rules

Nigeria to benefit from Group C leader’s error

South Africa may face FIFA sanctions in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers for allegedly fielding an ineligible player, which could result in the forfeiture of points.

The group leaders are under scrutiny for including Teboho Mokoena in their recent qualifier against Lesotho, despite the midfielder having received two yellow cards in prior matches—against Benin in the 54th minute and Zimbabwe in the 52nd minute.

According to FIFA regulations, a player who accumulates two yellow cards in different matches of the same competition is automatically suspended for the subsequent game. As a result, Mokoena should not have been eligible to play against Lesotho.

FIFA has previously enforced strict penalties for such infractions. In 2016, Bolivia was found guilty of fielding an ineligible player, leading to the forfeiture of their World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Peru. Yemen also faced similar sanctions in a comparable situation.

If FIFA confirms a breach of the rules, possible consequences for South Africa could include forfeiting the match against Lesotho and a points deduction.

Such a decision would directly impact the Group C standings, potentially benefiting Nigeria’s Super Eagles and other teams in contention.

FIFA is expected to review the matter and make an official announcement in due course.
