We are re-aligning ANA with its founding principles – President

Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, the current President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), speaks with Adeola Ogunrinde about the challenges facing ANA ahead of their National Convention.

One of the major challenges of any election is bringing the loser and those who won the election to work together as one. Have you been able to do that since you assumed office?

Since taking the reins, I have been on a mission to unite our members, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages collaboration and mutual respect. It’s like herding cats, but we’re getting there! We’ve engaged with members from diverse backgrounds, listened to their concerns, and worked to address them. By doing so, we’ve created a sense of belonging and shared purpose, bridging the gap between winners and losers – not just in our election, but in previous ones too. However, we still have some members who feel aggrieved, and one is even still in court with ANA! We’re working on them, though.

What is your experience as a writer and lecturer?

With three decades of experience in creative writing under my belt, I’ve honed my craft and shared my passion for literature with others. I have guided young writers, providing mentorship and guidance through my writing and literary programs. My goal? To inspire a love of literature and a commitment to excellence. I am proud to say I have made a difference in the lives of many writers.

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is a well-known body in and outside Nigeria. What collaborations have you made to take ANA to greater heights?

We have engaged a number of organizations and institutions, both within and outside Nigeria, to amplify our impact and influence. By working together, we can achieve far more than we could alone. Our goal? To create a vibrant literary ecosystem that showcases the best of Nigerian writing and promotes cross-cultural understanding.

There are many challenges in some chapters. How are you tackling this?

We are addressing chapter challenges through dialogue and support. We engage with chapter leaders and members to understand their needs and concerns, offering resources and support to help them overcome obstacles. By working together, I believe we can build stronger and more resilient chapters that contribute to ANA’s success.

There is a rumor going around that ANA would divide because some people believe the purpose for which ANA was established by its founding fathers has been deviated from. What are you doing to change this narrative?

We are re-aligning ANA with its founding principles, emphasizing literary excellence, national unity, and social responsibility. We are re-examining our values and priorities to ensure they remain relevant and meaningful. By re-committing to our core purpose, we hope to rebuild trust and confidence, thereby re-positioning ANA as the leading voice in the Nigerian creative writing industry.

ANA’s permanent site in Mpape, Abuja, what plans do you have for it? I know your predecessors have done great work there.

Our Writers Village in Mpape, Abuja, is a world-class center with state-of-the-art facilities for residencies, workshops, and events. It’s gradually becoming the literary hub that was envisioned at its conception – bringing writers and readers together in a supportive environment. We are showcasing rich Nigerian architecture that reflects our cultural heritage and aesthetic values.

ANA Convention 2024 will soon be around the corner. What plans do you have to make this a memorable one for everyone who participates?

We are planning an unforgettable convention, with engaging sessions, workshops, and cultural events celebrating the best of Nigerian writing. We will bring together writers, readers, and stakeholders from across the country and beyond, providing a platform for connection, learning, and growth.

What advice do you have for young writers of this generation?

My advice? Hone your craft, read widely, and stay true to your unique voice. Be open to learning, feedback, and growth, embracing the writing life as a journey of discovery. Use your words to inspire positive change, becoming part of a vibrant literary tradition that enriches and transforms society.
