Welding sparks minor fire at Warri Refinery

The Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPC) experienced a minor fire incident on Thursday afternoon, which was quickly put out by the refinery’s safety officers.

The fire, which started at about 15:02hrs, was triggered by “ongoing welding activity at the top of the cooling tower”, according to a press statement from the management of NNPC Limited, the owner of the refinery.

The statement further said that the fire “will not affect the refinery rehabilitation project delivery schedule” and that “normalcy has since been restored” at the facility.

The Warri Refinery is one of the four refineries owned by NNPC Limited, which is undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation project to restore its optimal capacity and efficiency.

The statement assured that NNPC Limited “will continue to adhere to the best safety standards in all its business operations” and thanked the public for their cooperation and support.
