Wema Bank has concluded the 11th edition of its internal sports tournament, Wemalympics, described as the largest corporate sports event in the Nigerian banking industry.

Launched in 2015, Wemalympics promotes camaraderie, physical fitness, teamwork, mental well-being and sportsmanship among the bank’s employees, popularly known as Knights. The 2026 edition was themed “Champions of Possibilities” and brought together employees, their families, partners and sponsors for various indoor and outdoor competitions.

At the grand finale held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Field, Lagos, on Saturday, the Lagos region emerged victorious after defeating the South-South region in the final round of the match-past competition.

The event followed preliminary and indoor competitions held at different locations, including the University of Lagos Sports Complex, where Obinna Obialor represented the head office to win the Wemalympics quiz. Activities also included a Wemalympics diary session featuring discussions on key issues surrounding the event.

The 2026 competition began in August, bringing together regional teams from across the country, including the South-West, Lagos, North, South-South and South-East, to compete in different sporting categories.

The tournament featured football, volleyball, athletics, including the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x100m relay, as well as indoor games such as table tennis, lawn tennis, scrabble and chess. Video games, including FIFA 24 and Mortal Kombat, were also part of the competition.

Speaking on the inspiration behind Wemalympics, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, said the competition reflected Wema Bank’s legacy of resilience, innovation, impact and commitment to surpassing targets.
