Who becomes the next Olubadan of Ibadanland?

By Adejayan Gbenga –
Following the passing of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, on July 7, 2025, attention has turned to the question of who will ascend the revered throne next. Among the leading contenders is High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, the current Otun Olubadan and a former governor of Oyo State.
A Unique Succession System
The Olubadan stool is one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional titles, with a structured and transparent succession process that sets it apart from many other monarchies in the country. The system operates on two alternating lines—the Otun (civil) and the Balogun (military)—through which high chiefs rise based on seniority and tenure.
As Otun Olubadan, Ladoja is the most senior chief in the civil line, making him the natural successor to the throne following the demise of Oba Olakulehin, who hailed from the military line.
Who Is High Chief Rasidi Ladoja?
Born on September 25, 1944, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja is a prominent figure in both the political and traditional spheres in Oyo State. He served as governor from 2003 to 2006 and has remained a respected voice in Ibadan’s cultural and civic affairs.
Beyond politics, Ladoja has played active roles in traditional matters. In May 2025, he represented the late Olubadan in the disciplinary process that led to the suspension of two Mogajis (family heads) over allegations of land grabbing. His involvement highlights his standing within the Olubadan-in-Council and his deep engagement with the city’s traditional institutions.
The Road to the Throne
The process for selecting a new Olubadan involves several formal steps:
Confirmation by the Olubadan-in-Council: Senior chiefs verify the eligibility and seniority of the next in line.
Approval by the State Government: The Governor of Oyo State—currently Seyi Makinde—must ratify the selection.
Coronation Ceremony: A formal event follows, officially installing the new Olubadan before dignitaries and the public.
If confirmed, Ladoja would be the first Olubadan to have previously served as a state governor—an unprecedented blend of political and traditional leadership.
A Legacy of Stability
Ibadan’s succession system has helped maintain peace and continuity for decades, avoiding the succession crises common in other Nigerian royal institutions. With Ladoja’s ascension widely expected, the city anticipates another smooth transition in its historic leadership.
As Ibadan prepares to usher in a new era, the potential reign of High Chief Rasidi Ladoja symbolizes both continuity and evolution in the cherished traditions of Ibadanland.
