Why Chelsea, Man Utd, other European clubs shunned Osimhen – Sunday Oliseh
Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has explained why top European clubs failed to sign Nigerian international Victor Osimhen despite his prolific goal-scoring record.
In a video widely shared on social media, the ex-Nigeria captain outlined the huge financial implications of landing Osimhen, estimating the total package at around €187 million over four years.
“Let’s get one thing clear for fans — football is about passion and love, but for the people running it, it’s pure business,” the former Juventus star said.
While Napoli’s reported asking price was €75 million, Oliseh noted that the actual cost was far higher when clauses and salary demands were added. His breakdown included the €75 million transfer fee, a 10% future resale clause for Napoli, and a €15 million net annual salary for Osimhen, amounting to about €112 million over four years once grossed up.
“That’s the real cost of acquiring and maintaining Osimhen. His wages alone are the biggest stumbling block for clubs,” Oliseh stated.
This price tag reportedly discouraged Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea, who were both heavily linked with the striker but unwilling to meet Napoli’s valuation.
Osimhen’s prolonged transfer saga eventually ended with a record-breaking move to Turkish champions Galatasaray, who paid the €75 million fee upfront and agreed to his €15 million net salary — making it the most expensive signing in Turkish football history.
The 26-year-old missed Galatasaray’s opening Super Lig match, a 3-0 win over Gaziantep, as he completed his transfer amid rising tensions with Napoli.
