Why I dumped APC, by El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai, has officially left the ruling party and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing dissatisfaction with the APC’s leadership and internal democracy.

El-Rufai, who announced his defection on his verified Facebook page on Monday, stated that he had submitted his resignation letter to his APC ward in Kaduna State after extensive consultations with his political mentors, colleagues, and loyalists.

“As a founding member of the APC, I have fond memories of working with others to negotiate the merger that formed the party. It had been my hope that my personal values and those of the APC would remain aligned,” he wrote.

However, he accused the APC’s leadership of ignoring internal concerns and weakening the party’s democratic structures.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that those in control of the APC have no interest in addressing the unhealthy state of the party,” he said.

El-Rufai, who played a key role in APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, added that he could no longer remain in a party that “castrated its organs and treated its members with contempt.”

On his decision to join the SDP, he said he would work towards uniting opposition parties to challenge the APC in future elections, including the 2027 general election.

“As a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to form a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections before 2027,” he stated.

El-Rufai also called on his supporters and other Nigerians concerned about the country’s future to join him in the SDP, emphasizing that his goal is to help Nigeria “flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black race.”
