Wike’s faction takes over PDP National Secretariat

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken control of the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja.

Addressing journalists at the FCT office of the PDP on Monday, the factional National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, announced that he was assuming office at the headquarters.

“We are all aware of the pitiable state of our great party due to the actions and inactions of some of our leaders and members,” Mohammed said. “From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to spending over a decade in opposition, our decline has been worsened by the defection of governors, legislators, and council chairmen.

“I have accepted to serve as Acting National Chairman through the mercy of God and the instrumentality of critical stakeholders of this party. My task is to heal the wounds, end factionalism, reposition the PDP, and restore discipline,” he stated.

Following his declaration, Mohammed and his supporters moved into the secretariat, where he held a brief meeting with loyalists, including the suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

However, supporters of the incumbent acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, were also present at the premises before police officers intervened to prevent a possible clash.

The development follows the suspension of Anyanwu and other officials loyal to Wike by the National Working Committee (NWC) under Damagum’s leadership. In a swift response, the Wike faction announced the suspension of Damagum and other top officers, naming Mohammed as the new acting National Chairman.
