World Cup: Super Falcons lose 4-2 to England on penalties

The Super Falcons crashed out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup after losing 4-2 to England on penalties in the round of 16 on Monday morning.
Both teams failed to find the back of the net in 90 minutes of normal time and another 30 minutes of extra time, forcing the game to penalties.
England were reduced to 10 players with three minutes of normal time to go after Lauren James who has had an impressive World Cup was sent off after a VAR review showed her stepping on the back of Michelle Alozie.
England handed Nigeria the initiative in the penalty shootout after Georgia Stanway played the first penalty wide, but Desire Oparanozie – who came in as a late sub – also did the same thing, playing wide, before Alozie blasted her effort over the bar.
With all the other players finding the back of the net – Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe for Nigeria – England won 4-2 to seal their place in the quarter-finals.
