World Day Against Child Labour: Oluremi Tinubu calls for stronger protection of children’s rights

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, has called for renewed efforts to protect children from labour exploitation, emphasising that every child deserves access to education, safety, and opportunities for personal development.
In a statement issued on Friday to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour, Mrs Tinubu said children should be in schools, playgrounds, and other safe environments rather than being subjected to work or forced labour.
The First Lady stressed that no child should be deprived of the chance to learn, grow, and achieve their aspirations because of exploitative labour practices.
Her message coincided with this year’s observance, themed “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” which highlights the need for collective action to eliminate child labour while promoting decent employment opportunities for adults.
“No child should be denied the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams because they are subjected to forced labour,” Mrs Tinubu stated.
She noted that children belong in homes, schools, and secure spaces where they can develop their talents and reach their full potential.
The First Lady urged governments, communities, development partners, and families to continue investing in children’s welfare and strengthening support systems that enable parents and caregivers to provide adequate care.
“I urge us to continue to invest in the well-being of our children and create opportunities that empower families and communities to take care of them,” she said.
