The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, Yobe State, Prof. Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, has lost her twin daughters, Dr. Hadiyah Usman Abdullahi, a medical doctor, and Aidah Usman Abdullahi, a pharmacist, within two days of each other following health complications.
The news of their deaths was announced by Fatima Kagu, a microbiologist, who shared the information on her Facebook page on Sunday, accompanied by prayers for the deceased and their bereaved family.
“Our hearts are with the family of Dr. (Prof.) Hadiza Usman, Medical Director, FMC Nguru, following the heartbreaking loss of her two beloved daughters, Dr. Hadiya and Pharm. Aida,” Kagu wrote.
The two women, one a medical doctor and the other a pharmacist, were daughters of a senior figure in Nigeria’s public health sector.
Although the circumstances surrounding their deaths were not disclosed in Kagu’s post, reports indicated that Hadiyah died on Friday after spending about a week at FMC Nguru, where she was reportedly receiving treatment for a sickle cell crisis. She was buried the same day following funeral prayers at the Emir’s Palace.
Her twin sister, Aidah, who was reportedly receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital around the same period, was said to have recovered and was discharged.
Aidah reportedly visited her sister’s grave after her discharge but suddenly collapsed on Sunday and was rushed to a hospital, where she later died.
The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, subsequently confirmed Aidah’s death in a Facebook post, describing her as “the second twin”.
