Zulum hails Tinubu over N68bn support for Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N68 billion operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), describing the intervention as timely and vital to the state’s recovery and development.
The governor gave the commendation on Thursday in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, noting that the funding would bridge existing gaps and ensure the sustained operation of the facility.
Zulum noted the Federal Government’s intervention under President Tinubu would significantly improve electricity supply, while also boosting security and economic activities in Borno State.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I wish to most profoundly appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for approving N2 billion monthly OPEX intervention funding from March 2026 to December 2028, totalling N68 billion to bridge the existing funding gap in the operations of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP),” he stated.
He recalled that the emergency power project was initiated in 2021 as a presidential intervention following prolonged electricity outages caused by the destruction of power infrastructure by insurgents.
According to him, the 50MW plant, commissioned in December 2023, has already helped revive economic activities, created jobs, and supported small and medium-scale enterprises in the state. Zulum added that stable electricity supply has also contributed to improved security by strengthening livelihoods and reducing vulnerabilities linked to insurgency and criminality.
He further noted that the new funding approval would ensure a more sustainable power supply to Maiduguri and its environs, thereby strengthening resilience in the region.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Federal Government to drive development in the energy sector and promote lasting peace and stability in Borno State.
