16 Governors’ infantile demand for scrapping the EFCC, by Kola Amzat

The dominant news in the polity in the last couple of days is the unpatriotic demand on the Supreme Court by 16 governors to scrap the Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Even though, the governors have totally failed in the court of the public opinion, as their selfish demand has attracted opprobrium, outright condemnation and ridicule from Nigerian public, nonetheless, it is logical to situate their cruel demand in proper perspective.

It’s curious that those governors could be so emboldened, with un-usual effrontery to initiate such ridiculous suit in the first instance, particularly considering the tragic implication it would have on the nation longtime battle against corruption, an endemic plague that has almost raze the country to its foundation.

Methinks and perhaps, generality of Nigerians too, that those State Executives supposed not only to be vanguard of safeguarding the sanctity and sacredness of the Anti-graft Agency/s, but, also continually collaborating with federal government to ensuring the strengthening of the Institution for better, robust and efficient performance.

This writer is also opined that, what’s the essence of the 16 governors in occupying the exalted offices if they couldn’t collaborate with the federal government as the 2nd Tier of government in tackling wide scale & widespread corruption in the land, an hydra-headed disease that has robbed the whole nation of genuine development and prosperity, as well as undermined the country’s precious brand in the eyes of international community and global financial institutions.

It’s instructive to submit that Nigeria presently occupied very unsavory and unrespectable position in the list of Transparent International.

Meanwhile, millions of Nigerian people are unanimous in their views that the mind-boggling corruption in the land is undoubtedly the reason for the nation prostrate economy, infrastructural decay, rot in medical and the nation educational infrastructures, and more importantly, the major reason behind increased in criminality-banditry, insurgence, kidnapping, armed robbery, as well as persistence social unrest and upheaval.

How come the 16 governors are insensitive to these daunting challenges ravaging the motherland and that, what bother them is the abolition of EFCC so that they could have free rein to continue the regime of looting from the treasury?

How come the governors are not alarmed with potential consequences of their provocative suit demanding for abolition of EFCC?

It’s particularly embarrassing and heartrending to see Oyo, Ondo, Ogun and Anambra in that list of the rebellious governors, who with all intents and purposes, should know better.

Maybe they’re not aware that the ridiculous suit has sent shock wave across the country, with Nigerians overwhelmed with regrets & lamentation of their blunder in giving mandates to those governors in the first place, as it’s now crystal clear that those state executives only struggled for power with the main objective to scoop whatever, and in equivocal terms, loot from the system, and never concern with purposeful, resourceful and selfless governance.

The million dollar question to those governors remain: are they indeed out to sabotage the spirited efforts of the federal authority in fighting corruption?

Are they comfortable with the prevailing peace of graveyard in the country, occasioned by anger, hungry, poverty and deprivation across the land?

Are the 16 governors not alarmed that the nation’s nascent democracy is been subjected to threat of vociferous voices of the teeming youths, clamoring for substantial reduction in the cost of governance, as well as the citizenry’s persistent calls for blocking the loopholes of corruption?

Are those state executives not alerted by the spiral inflationary rate across board, an undesirable economic mishap that has continually erode the populace’s purchasing power?

Are those governors undisturbed by the loud protest of disapproval by teeming youths been expressed through their migration to just any country, including those lesser endowed frontiers in search of survival, on account of endemic corruption in the land?

More importantly, are the governors comfortable with larger percentage of Nigerian youths hugging criminality in their quest for survival?

This writer belief fervently that it’s not too late for the 16 governors to consider withdrawing the provocative and ridiculous suit from the Apex Court, if they indeed desire to maintain their respect, honour and dignity.
