2023 presidency: PDP NEC to decide on zoning today

The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to decide on the party’s stance on zoning of the presidency today ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
The party had set up a 37-man committee chaired by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom – with members from each state – to deliberate on the issue.
The committee submitted its report last month in which it recommended to the party that the contest be thrown open to all contesters.
WesternPost gathered that the matter was top on the agenda at the party’s NEC scheduled for the national secretariat in Abuja by 2pm.
With President Muhammadu Buhari completing his eight-year term on May 29, 2023, there have been agitations for power to shift to the South.
Both leading parties – the All Progressives Congress and the PDP – have however not been able to agree on the issue of zoning.
The PDP has 15 presidential aspirants, with at least five of them coming from the North. They include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, governors of Sokoto and Bauchi states, Aminu Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed and former banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
While the southern aspirants have insisted on zoning, the northern aspirants believe the race should be thrown open to allow a popular candidate fly the party’s ticket.
