2026 WCQ: FIFA names Egyptian referee Omar for Nigeria, Benin Republic match

Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar will direct proceedings when Nigeria’s Super Eagles face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier.
World football governing body, FIFA, confirmed the appointment of Omar for the all-important Group C showdown, scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on Tuesday, October 14.
It will be an all-Egyptian officiating team, as FIFA announced that Omar will be assisted by his compatriots, who will serve as assistant referees and fourth official.
Prosper Addo of Ghana will serve as Match Commissioner for the encounter between the two West African neighbours.
The match carries huge significance for both sides, with Benin currently topping the group with 14 points and a superior goal difference, while third-placed Nigeria, with 11 points, are determined to level on points and brighten their chances of qualifying for the Mundial.
FIFA’s recent decision to deduct three points from South Africa, after Bafana Bafana fielded an ineligible player in their game against Lesotho, has thrown the battle in Group C wide open.
With both Benin and Nigeria eyeing a place at the 2026 World Cup, all eyes will be on Uyo when the two rivals clash in what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.
