2027: Don’t fight over politicians who remain friends, Timi Dakolo tells Nigerians

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has urged Nigerians to stop fighting over political differences, saying politicians who appear opposed in public often maintain cordial relationships behind the scenes.

The ‘Iyawo Mi’ crooner made the clarification after his Thursday post on X, in which he advised Nigerians against making enemies because of politics, sparked mixed reactions.

While some users described his advice as hypocritical, questioning his performances at events organised by political parties, others defended him, arguing that his message was a call for peace rather than an endorsement of any political group.

Responding to the criticism, Dakolo said his observations of politicians from different parties interacting privately had influenced his position.

He explained that politicians who engage in fierce political battles in public often exchange pleasantries, discuss their families and businesses, and maintain friendly relationships when cameras are off.

“Dear Nigerians, I can never be your enemy or take the side of oppressors. I’ve been in rooms with these men in politics when the cameras are off, and they are not fighting,” he wrote.

The singer said he was initially surprised to witness politicians who publicly disagreed embracing one another and enquiring about each other’s families, projects and businesses.

According to him, ordinary Nigerians often become divided and hostile towards one another over politicians who may not share the same animosity.

“These are the people we fight each other over and divide ourselves because of, and that’s how they win. They divide us, and we fight among ourselves,” he said.
