2027: Kwankwaso rejects defection without presidential or vp ticket

By Kunle Sanni –
Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has said he would only consider leaving the party if he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing NNPP supporters at his residence in Kano. He also criticised reports of a planned defection by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal.
The former Kano governor said that despite his more than 40 years in politics, his supporters across the country would only back a defection if it guarantees him one of the top two positions on the ballot in 2027.
According to him, the APC had approached him to join the party, but talks failed due to the absence of a clear and concrete offer that would benefit him and NNPP leaders.
Kwankwaso said the proposals presented did not address his political standing or the role of the party’s national leadership, noting that no firm assurances were given during the discussions.
He reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to its Kwankwasiyya ideology, which he said focuses on supporting the poor and empowering young people through employment, education, economic growth, improved healthcare and agricultural development.
Kwankwaso stressed that unity in Kano State was essential for electoral success, describing the 2027 elections as a national contest that requires a united front.
Reacting to the reported defection plan by Governor Yusuf, Kwankwaso said he was surprised and disappointed, adding that the governor failed to consult him or provide justification for the move.
