2027: Kwara’s next governor should emerge based on competence, not zoning – Ishowo
By Oluwatoyin Hawal Momolosho –
The Director of Media and Strategic Communication to the Senator representing Kwara Central, Comrade Abdullateef Ishowo, has insisted that the 2027 governorship ticket in Kwara State must be based on merit rather than zoning.
Ishowo, who spoke on Sobi FM’s flagship programme Oro Ilu on Thursday, argued that zoning or rotational governorship is alien to the Nigerian Constitution and Kwara’s political structure, adding that all aspirants should be free to contest freely through party primaries.
Recalling how past attempts to formalise zoning, particularly within the Kwara PDP, collapsed due to the absence of legal support, Ishowo noted that what the state needs is a leader with vision, competence, and strong character, not one selected solely on regional considerations.
“At this critical moment, what Kwara needs is character and competence,” he said. “Let every aspirant go to the primaries and test their strength.”
Ishowo cited ongoing security concerns and the need for firm leadership as reasons why the state cannot risk electing what he described as an “unprepared or incompetent candidate.” He noted that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration has faced significant challenges requiring stability and decisive governance.
He urged residents to prioritise merit by supporting candidates with clear, impactful agendas for the state rather than pursuing regional zoning formulas.
