2028 Olympics: Timely funding, proper planning key to Nigeria’s success – Adamu
By Olaolu Joseph
Former Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr Amos Adamu, has called for timely release of funds and proper planning to enable Nigeria make a strong impact at the 2028 summer Olympics.
The sports administrator, while reviewing the country’s disappointing performance at the last Olympics, warned that the country might end up doing badly unless necessary steps were taken ahead of the next games.
Nigeria, it will be recalled, failed to win a single medal, rather the country’s participation was marred by controversies.
Seemingly skeptical of a similar fate befalling the country in the next edition of the olympics, the former FIFA/CAF chieftain, has voiced out, urging the authorities to take the right steps so as to save the country from the imminent disgrace.
“You don’t buy medals at the Olympucs. You plan and work for it overtime and you make funds available for early and proper planning”, Dr Adamu stated.
He noted that Nigeria was able to achieve something positive at past Olympics due to proper planning and timely release of funds.
“I wasn’t surpised with the failure at the last Olympics becuase the necessary steps needed were not taken. “The athletes didn’t get money to train as at when due”, adding that,” Medals are are not sold but won”.
He noted that during his tenure, long term athletes development, overseas training, and timely funding were prioritise.
“Even with an increased budget, there may nothing to celebrate as achievement at the end of the 2028 Olympics, except the right steps were taken as at when due”, Dr Amamu cautioned.
