Manchester United lose 2-1 to Aston Villa as Morgan Rogers strikes twice

Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, with Morgan Rogers scoring twice to condemn Ruben Amorim’s side to another defeat.

Villa made a strong start and took the lead through Rogers, who capitalised on space in the wide areas to put the hosts ahead. United responded positively and drew level when Matheus Cunha found the net, raising hopes of a comeback.

However, Rogers proved decisive once again, scoring his second goal of the match to restore Villa’s advantage and secure all three points for the home side.

United’s afternoon was further complicated by an injury to captain Bruno Fernandes, who picked up a knock in the first half. Although he managed to complete the opening 45 minutes, he was replaced at half-time, adding to United’s growing list of concerns during a congested run of fixtures.

Speaking after the game, Diogo Dalot said United were aware of the threat Rogers posed but felt certain situations could have been handled better. He added that United created chances but failed to make the most of them.

The defeat comes at a difficult time for United, who are already without Amad, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui due to the Africa Cup of Nations, while Kobbie Mainoo recently picked up an injury in training. The fitness of Fernandes is now another worry for Amorim as he looks ahead to the next round of matches.

Despite the loss, there were positives in the form of debuts for Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher, with Bendito Mantato also named on the bench, as United’s injury problems opened the door for younger players to feature.
