The myth of competence: How Peter Obi’s image collapses under a single form, by Oreoluwa Olaleye

There’s a carefully manufactured image that follows Peter Obi everywhere:
The competent man.
The calm technocrat.
The numbers guy.
The spreadsheet saviour who will rescue Nigeria with charts, ratios and fiscal sermons.

It’s a powerful brand.!
…and like most powerful brands, it survives only as long as no one looks too closely – the unfortunate part however is that this same Mr. Peter Obi was Governor of Anambra State at a point and it was a catastrophe, we can’t even compare Obi’s Anambra to Tinubu’s Lagos.

And that’s where it gets interesting because the moment you zoom in (really zoom in) the myth collapses under something embarrassingly small: something like a form that was never filed e.t.c.

Now let’s look into this circus called “Obi’s Integrity”;

1.) The Cult of Competence

Peter Obi’s political persona is built almost entirely on presentation.
He doesn’t sell charisma.
He doesn’t sell ideology.
He sells competence.

Budgets.
Debt figures.
GDP comparisons.
“How much Nigeria could save if…”

He talks like a man who never misses deadlines.
Like someone who runs tight systems.
Like someone allergic to inefficiency.

That’s why the irony hits so hard.

Because the same man who lectures an entire nation on discipline couldn’t meet the most basic compliance requirement for a UK-registered company.
No fraud.
No scandal.
No billions missing.

Just paperwork.
And he failed it.
…but that also should remind you of his catastrophic rule of Anambra State and how he was like the Smartest Thief ever in Nigerian Politics.

2.) One Small Failure, One Big Question

Next International, a UK-registered company linked to Peter Obi, was struck off in 2021 for one reason only: failure to file required annual returns.

Now let’s all be clear — UK Companies House does not negotiate.
No drama.
No politics.
No witch-hunt.

You file → you exist.
You don’t → you’re gone.

That’s it.

So when people try to downplay this as “nothing” they miss the point entirely.
This isn’t about the size of the company.
It’s about the size of the contradiction.

A man whose entire political value proposition is attention to detail failed at the detail.

Why This Isn’t Trivial (No Matter How Much You Want It To Be)

Supporters love to say “It’s just a small administrative issue.”
Exactly.
That’s the problem.

Leadership is revealed in small things long before big power arrives.

If you can’t keep a dormant foreign company compliant (with reminders, grace periods, and crystal-clear rules), why should anyone believe you’ll manage:

○ ministries with competing interests

○ budgets with political pressure

○ audits with international scrutiny

○ deadlines that actually matter

Running a country is not motivational speaking.
It’s paperwork on steroids.
…and against Peter Obi’s failure in Anambra asva Governor is still an epic chapter in Nigeria’s history.

3.) The Dangerous Gap Between Image and Execution

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Peter Obi is extremely good at talking about systems.
But this incident exposes a gap between knowing and doing.
…funny enough, most times it’s also like he doesn’t know what he’s saying, a typical case of cramming to pass an examination, so you can ask Peter Obi about Economies and next thing he’s talking about how he was washing Toilets for Fashola.

Knowing what fiscal discipline looks like is not the same as practicing it.
Explaining efficiency is not the same as executing it.
Quoting numbers is not the same as respecting process.

And leadership punishes that gap brutally.!

Nigeria doesn’t need a man who can explain why systems fail.
Nigeria needs someone who doesn’t let them fail in the first place – and Obi is that failure that shouldn’t be allowed to be President in Nigeria; if anything, maybe at most he can be Vice President to Atiku Abubakar.

4.) Competence Is Not a Vibe

Yes, in politics vibes are dangerous.
They allow people to project qualities that haven’t been tested.

Peter Obi’s competence has largely been accepted on vibes:

  • He sounds #calm.
  • He speaks #numbers.
  • He contrasts well with louder #politicians.

○ But competence is not a personality trait.
● Competence is a track record.

And when the #record shows missed deadlines in a system as unforgiving as the UK’s, or the chaos and catastrophe in Anambra under Peter Obi’s watch, it’s right to pause.!

5.) The Form That Broke the Illusion

This isn’t about criminality.
It’s worse than that.

Crimes can be explained away.
Negligence at the basics cannot.

Because the form didn’t require brilliance.
It didn’t require genius.
It required consistency – only consistency.
…at least i file tax reports for 3 different businesses, so I know what I’m saying.

Peter Obi’s image collapses not because of #corruption, scandal, or proven theft — but because competence, when tested, turned out to be performative and refusing to file reports actually exposes the fact that Peter Obi is a bloody liar,
…the type of man that can refuse to fill a form or find a means to evade tax and even divert government funds if in power.

So yes: If a single form can expose that much weakness, Nigerians have every right to ask:

Was the myth ever real?
Or were we just impressed by a well-delivered spreadsheet?
